A simplified stand-alone version of the Tradeoff Analysis Model has been developed for education purposes. The study area in the north of the Netherlands is typical for the Dutch dairy system. Farmers have to decrease their mineral fertilizer and manure applications because of European legislation to prevent excessive nitrate leaching. The model illustrates the different kinds of management a farmer can take to decrease his nitrogen surpluses. The model is used in the courses "Multi-functional land use" (SFI-32304) and "Quantitative Analysis of Land Use Systems" (PPS-30304) at Wageningen University.

Typical small-scale landscape with grasslands surrounded by hedgerows and relatively small farms.

In the Netherlands farmers reach the highest milk productions, but the drawback of the system are the manure surpluses with its ammonia and nitrate losses.
